  • Overview

    Develops and manages a team of claims managers and adjusters responsible for auto, casualty, and homeowners liability claims incurred by direct business lines by ensuring correct and consistent implementation of claims procedures.  Directs and monitors operational activities for assigned claims unit.  Accountable for attainment of business plan objectives in alignment with company goals and claims strategy through collaboration and individual contribution. 


    • Oversees the operational claims activity performed by assigned claims staff to ensure compliance with company and claims procedures to ensure fair and consistent claims practices within respective region and line of business.
    • Ensures the quality, accuracy, effectiveness and legal compliance of claims processing and claims management through supervision, auditing, coaching and policy enforcement.Provides counsel and direction concerning the resolution of complex claims/complaints.
    • Makes recommendations to enhance the efficiency of the Direct Claims operation, policies, and procedures.Supports recommendation with research including pros/cons and possible versus probable outcomes. 
    • Implements organizational and divisional policies and procedures within the Direct Claims Division to ensure understanding and coordination are completed effectively.
    • Responds to Department of Insurance, agents, mutuals and other customer inquiries and complaints to enhance customer service offered.
    • Approves authority for claims decisions, reserves, settlements, and payments either directly or through delegation.
    • Researches, analyzes, summarizes, and designs claims topical presentation and delivers presentations occasionally to varied groups/audiences.
    • Monitors and remains abreast of industry trends, relevant state statutes and regulations through professional associations, e.g., NAMIC, PIA, Central Claims Executive Association, Iowa Claims Executive Council.
    • Recommends training programs, e.g., technical claims skills, customer service, or management/supervisory development to effectively develop assigned personnel. Utilizes coaching, feedback and performance management skills to supplement training and ensure transfer to daily work. 
    • Represents the Direct Claims division at local or regional meetings with Farm Mutual managers, members or agents as assigned.
    • All other duties as assigned.


    Supervisory Responsibilities:


    • Supervises Direct Claims team. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; develop and set goals with team; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
    • Supports managers and supervisors efforts in development of claims adjusters (field and telephone) and claims assistants.Provides direction and resources in anticipation of coaching, development, and technical needs.

    • The Director of Claims deals with many types of people which can be stimulating yet demanding and stressful.


    • The position is physically located in the home office. The position requires an individual to sit for long periods of time.


    • The work environment is one generally encountered in a typical office environment; noise level is relatively quiet and occasional stress is encountered when dealing with challenging customers.


    • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university, five (5) or more years related property-casualty claims experience, and three (3) or more years supervising exempt and non-exempt staff who work at both on-site and remote locations. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. 


    • Technical insurance designations such as Associate in Claims (AIC), Senior Claim Law Associate (SCLA), or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) preferred.   


    • Ability to delegate responsibility and work with others to coach and develop their capabilities.  


    • The ability to take responsibility for one’s own or one’s employees’ performance, by setting clear goals and expectations, tracking progress against the goals, and ensuring feedback, and addressing performance issues promptly.  
    • Experience setting and achieving goals related to business improvement as well as team development.
    • Experience in vetting and managing vendors and key business partners.


    • Ability to demonstrate support of organizational changes needed to improve the organization’s effectiveness; initiating, sponsoring, and implementing change; helping others to successfully manage organizational change. Serves as positive influence.  


    • Ability to work cooperative with others either on a team, committee, or task force while demonstrating interest, skill, and success in getting groups to work together. Functions as team leader for assigned region and may take team leader role for special projects.  


    • Possess and utilize strong verbal and written skills in order to respond to customers, develop staff members, make presentations for management, and represent the organization at professional functions and meetings. Demonstrated ability to maintain open, effective communication with internal and external customers.


    • Ability to demonstrate good interpersonal, listening, and customer service skills to resolve difficult situations or problems.      


    • Demonstrated negotiation skills in resolving customer complaints or representing claim to claims committee.  


    • Ability to use personal judgment, experience, known facts and figures to make decisions and resolve problems related to difficult claims.  


    • Ability to manage and prioritize projects.


    • Ability to incorporate the core values of Grinnell Mutual in all actions and activities while serving as a role model to all internal and external customers.  


    • Ability to function independently, goal oriented, persuasive and able to work in a team environment with limited supervision.  


    • Protects confidential and proprietary information as described in corporate policies and procedures disclosing information only as the business need dictates.  


    • Ability to use general office equipment and demonstrate basic knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products including MS Word®, Excel®, and PowerPoint® as well as claims specific applications such as Power Claim and Exactimate.  


    • Ability to maintain a regular and predictable schedule. 






    Responsibility & Decision Making Authority:


    • Reviews and approves or declines manager’s recommendation to increase authority limit and file settlement. 


    • Selects qualified staff and develops training plans for direct reports. 


    • Develops and recommends goals and action plans for approval by management.
