The DevOps Engineer is responsible for researching, installation, maintenance, performance, scheduling and support of critical application and data delivery platforms that enable the company’s IT operations. A significant focus is on the automation of many of the core tasks associated with these responsibilities. 


This position qualifies for our flexible workplace options. Work at our Grinnell, Iowa, headquarters or from a home office in any of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Please note that candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. without Grinnell Mutual sponsorship.


  • Automates the build and deployment of custom application code throughout the entire application lifecycle.


  • Regularly engages with application development teams to provide technical direction and guidance in automating application (Primary Guidewire) and infrastructure deployments.


  • Identifies and assists in the design and implementation of automated tools to improve the continuous deployment pipeline.


  • Establishes consistent processes to effectively manage assigned projects while also lending support to the team.


  • Develops common DevOps strategies for cross-department coordination of DevOps functions.


  • Ensures availability, reliability, and optimal performance of systems and services by developing the ability to interpret monitoring, logging, and alerting systems output.


  • Deploys updates as required while implementing integrations when they arise.


  • Mature processes to create infrastructure that is easily deployable and scalable and educates others on infrastructure as code patterns.


  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Management Information Systems and/or equivalent work experience, plus three (3) years or more of information technology experience, such as automation, DevOps or code development; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Experience with Git, Tomcat, Jenkins, Apache toolset.  Optional experience would include PowerShell, .NET, Chef, Guidewire, Help Systems Automate, IIS, Docker, Linux     


  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD).


  • Knowledge of ITIL standards and best practices.


  • Strong understanding of DevSecOps fundamentals; including experience in containerization and pipeline security, secure code delivery and execution, and with Docker and orchestration tools, such as Kubernetes.


  • Ability to think logically and to continually use personal judgment, experience, known facts and figures to make decisions and deal with issues and opportunities.


  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge as well as industry concepts to move the organization towards meeting strategic objectives.


  • Strong verbal and written skills. Ability to collaborate with others to recommend end-to-end improvements. Demonstrated ability to maintain open, effective communication with internal and external customers.


  • Demonstrated ability to influence key stakeholders and decision makers.


  • Works in a harmonious manner with company management, peers, customers, and agents.


  • Ability to keep a regular work schedule and maintain regular, predictable attendance.


  • Maintains confidentiality.


  • Limited travel including an occasional overnight may be required to attend training or user group conference, visit customer or vendor location. Ability to adhere to our Fleet Safety Policy.

  • The position is physically located in a remote office or at a Grinnell Mutual campus with a work environment of a typical office setting; noise level is relatively quiet. May required to provide after-hours or weekend support as needed. The position requires an individual to sit for extended periods of time, use repetitive motion, and possess visual acuity demanded by work with computer and other LCD screen devices.
